Concrete Masonry design:

Topics:

Specified design procedure in ACI 530 -05:

  • Allowable stress design (chapter 2)

  • Strength design (Chapter 3)

  • Prestressed masonry (Chapter 4)

  • Empirical design (Chpater 5)

  • Glass Unit Masonry (Chapter 7)

Load combinations:

Allowable stress design:

1. Use load combinations from building code.

2. When building code does not provide load combinations, use the following load combinations

  • D

  • D+L

  • D+L+(W or E) (1/3 stress increase allowed)

  • D+W (1/3 stress increase allowed)

  • 0.9D+E  (1/3 stress increase allowed)

  • D+L+(H or F)

  • D+ (H or F)

  • D+L+T

  • D+T

where D is dead load, L is live load, W is wind load, E is seismic load, H is lateral earth pressure, F is hydraulic pressure, and T is pressure from temperature change, shrinkage, or creep.

Strength design:

1. Use load combinations from building code.

2. When building code does not provide load combinations, use load combinations from ASCE 7-02.
